Candidates sought for the student selection examination of the Graduate Course (Doctor’s Course) in Physical Education at the Graduate School

  • Individuals with an abundance of practical experience in sports, who have the desire and ability to apply the results of scientific research in order to take on a high-level role in competitive sports, the martial arts, physical education, and sports education in Japan.
  • Individuals who recognize the contribution of lifelong sports to the health and happiness of people in Japan. Potential candidates should have the desire and ability to participate in the various fields related to sports and physical activity in Japan, including culture, regional politics, medical welfare, and the health industry.
  • Individuals with the desire and ability to carry out high-level research within the fields of sports and physical exercise as an active as researcher on a global scale.

  1. Super Students (“SS”) are those individuals with experience participating in international competitions, and who have a research theme clearly intended to work from this experience to improve competiveness in specialist events. These candidates should have sufficient desire to conduct research, and have received authorization in advance from the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya.
    Please contact the Head of Examinations at the Education Affairs Section regarding the system for recognition and acceptance of SS.
  2. Students presently studying on Doctor’s courses may also be eligible to transfer to or re-enter the University. Interested candidates should contact the Head of Examinations in the Educational Affairs Section.

Eligibility for application

Those to whom any of the following six points applies may submit an application for the entrance examination of the Graduate Course (Doctor’s Course) in Physical Education at the Graduate School.

  1. Individuals who hold a master's degree or a professional degree, or who are scheduled to obtain one by March 2011.
  2. Individuals who have been awarded a degree equivalent to a master's degree or a professional degree overseas, or whom are scheduled to receive one by March 2011.
  3. Those who have studied courses at a university overseas through distance education while in Japan and have received a degree equivalent to a master's degree or a professional degree, or whom are scheduled to receive one by March 2011.
  4. Individuals who have received a degree equivalent to a master’s degree by completing a course at a United Nations university established in accordance with clause 2, article 1 of the special measures law provided in the United Nations resolution of December 11, 1972, in accordance with the agreement between the United Nations and Japan regarding the United Nations University.
  5. Individuals appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (Ministry of Education, Science and Culture Proclamation 118) . (Note 1) (Note 2)
  6. Individuals recognized as possessing academic ability at least equivalent that of a master's degree through an individual assessment of matriculation qualifications by the Graduate School of this University, and who are at least 24 years of age as of March 2011. (Note 2)

(Note 1) The following requirements apply to individuals designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.

  • Individuals must have graduated from university, have engaged in at least two years of research at a university or research institution, and who, through that research, have achieved results deemed equivalent to that of a master’s degree from the Graduate School of this University.
  • Individuals must have completed a sixteen-year educational curriculum outside Japan, or have completed the equivalent of a sixteen-year educational curriculum through distance education courses from a school outside Japan, and who have engaged in at least two years of research at a university or research institution. Through this research, such individuals must have achieved results deemed equivalent to that of a master’s graduate from the Graduate School of this University.

(Note 2) Those candidates who apply based on conditions 5 or 6 above must obtain assessment in advance to apply to this University. Such candidates must submit the following documents by the deadlines specified.
Before applying for advance assessment, please contact the supervisor you wish to research under (a member of staff who could become your research supervisor) and consult with that supervisor in advance regarding the content of your studies and research after matriculation.

*Additional notes regarding qualifications for application

  1.  Those applying for entrance as adult students should possess experience as an adult member of society, an appreciation for the field of physical education, a defined research theme, and a desire to conduct research.
  2. Application for the screening test for international students is available to those who hold citizenship of a country other than Japan.
  3. To be eligible to apply as SS, individuals must possess experience participating in international competition, with a research theme clearly intended to work from this experience to improve competiveness in specialist events, and a desire to conduct research.

Selection methods

Selection of candidates will be based on a comprehensive review of each candidate’s master’s thesis or equivalent papers, application documents, a written / oral test (Foreign language (English)) of academic ability, and on the results of a physical examination.
